Today I just found out about your passing on August 24th due to pancreatic cancer, I’ve been out of the loop these days. 46 was too young to go; having seen all of your animated productions that you’ve directed thus far (Millenium Actress is my favorite!), I was looking forward to all the other awesomeness that you would be making. Heck, if someone somehow convinced you to direct a 5-second commercial for bottle openers, I would watch that religiously.

My world is a little emptier today, you will be sorely missed.

Arrivederci,

The human citizens sure did like you guys. There was probably entire gangs of cats running around in the old days along with all the sheep. One of my favorite things about Castelvecchio Calvisio was the evidence of cat and human co-habitation everywhere: cat doors. You must be exceptionally slender kitties to be able to fit through these doors, some of them are no taller than a few inches. My friend Pandora would be able to squish through only the largest of the doors, she prefers to focus on her job of windowsill warmer. Maybe someday you guys should talk her into chasing a few mice once in a while.

A selection of some of the doors I found while walking around the town center (incidentally, it’s also a good selection of the variety of doors which I thoroughly appreciated as well):

I met some kitties that are still roaming the streets; most are probably strays, but a few seemed sophisticated enough to have a human companion:

It was fun hanging out in Castelvecchio and meeting its people: human, feline, and canine. I certainly hope that things will get better for everyone here. This town is too nice to allow it to fall apart into obscurity and there’s so much potential, people just need to realize it’s here. If all goes well, the road to revitalization will be started with the help of my school and others institutions, and then everyone will have their home again. Buona fortuna, Castelvecchio Calvisio!

There’s an old trail that leads to Castelvecchio from you, Santo Stefano di Sessanio. It’s a trail that the shepherds back in the olden days would use to migrate their sheep from their high, cold hill towns in the winter to the lower, warmer region of Puglia, a twice-a-year event called the Transumanza. Dozens of these trails, called tratturi, lead down from the hill towns and merge together like a river to form a trail that can be almost a hundred meters wide in some places. Ever so often along the way, a church was built to provide shelter for the shepherds and their flock. Back in the old days, at least; nowadays, most of the tratturi are in disuse since most sheep farmers have switched over to flatbed trucks to move their livestock.

Part of our project in Castelvecchio was to walk along the tratturo connecting Santo Stefano to Castelvecchio, which is at a lower elevation, as the shepherds once did. This tratturo is still maintained, since it grants access to the valley in between where some crops are still grown. I think tourism to some degree is the key to restarting the economy here; the scenery is beautiful, and the land is perfect for hiking or trekking. Though the sheep herds of antiquity no longer support the economy here, herds of a different sort (people) can replace what’s been lost to time and to the Abruzzo earthquake.

The morning sun rising to the east of Castelvecchio the day of our walk:

But that secondary to our destination, which lay to our west, Santo Stefano!

There it is, waaaay off in the distance in the middle. It’s about 6 kilometers away by foot. Good thing the day was partially cloudly, or I would have probably sweated my entire body onto the tratturo like ice cream. These snails seem to have the right idea by clinging to some grass and sleeping the morning away:

Previously, my RISD students and I met a friendly stray dog in Castelvecchio. He certainly appreciated the attention that we were lavishing on him. I named him Duke, because he looks like a Duke. Someone else named him Clive Livingston. Our teacher said that he heard some locals refer to him as Bipo. This dog is going to have an identity crisis by the time we’re done with him:

Bipo/Duke/Clive the Dog decided to accompany us on our walk, making it seem like more of an adventure now:

Some sort of crazy thistle plant that were all along the path, the picture doesn’t show it too well, but it was a surprising shade of purple:

Approaching the middle of the valley, some nice meadows along the way:

A pile of stones in another field, probably left over from when the fields were plowed in preparation for planting. In Rhode Island, there’s miles of old stone walls left over from when farmers cleared them off their fields. Here, it looks like they just make lots of pretty rock piles:

As the trail hit the bottom of the valley, it was almost a straight shot through the middle:

Bipo/Duke/Clive the Dog had a blast running through the fields on either side of the path. He wasn’t chasing anything in particular, just running and smelling and being a happy dog.

We reached the other side of the valley and started winding uphill. Here we got a good view of the central valley area, Castelvecchio is on the farthest hill at the other end, we could barely see it:

Arrival in Santo Stefano!

The skies decided to throw a shower down right after we arrived, so we took refuge in a local bar (Italian bars are basically cafes with some light food options and some conveniences like cigarettes and bus tickets). Bipo/Duke/Clive the Dog also came in to rest with us:

While Castelvecchio has a hefty town wall and unique center layout, you had a nifty 14th century stone watchtower built by the Medici family. The earthquake totally toppled the whole thing; many suspect this was due to a modern renovation to the top of the tower which gave people a nice view of the countryside, but made the whole structure top-heavy in the process

It’ll be rebuilt eventually, but in the meantime, the townspeople had workers build a scaffold outline of what the tower used to look like:

Here’s a picture of what the tower used to look like, courtesy of this NY Times article:

The earthquake did some damage here as well:

But some of the buildings came through fine, they were recently restored as part of an effort to revitalize the town and converted into rustic hotel rooms. The hotel is called the Sextantio, an albergo diffuso (“scattered hotel”) which was founded by Leilo Oriano di Zio and Daniele Kihlgren. The rooms are spread all over the center of the town, and they preserve the old features of the buildings while updating with modern amenities like electrical outlets and flushing toilets (old school toilets were holes built into the side of your building where your biological leftovers would go straight out onto the street). Wood fire hearths, old but restored wooden furniture, small windows with great views. Some rooms have the original barrel vault ceilings where people would store things from hanging hooks. Overall, definitely an interesting hotel to stay in and a good start for the economy, when we were visiting all the rooms were booked!

We got a ride back to Castelvecchio on the local school bus and that night I spent with some students at the discoteca (aka the basketball field with a man playing music on his keyboard and mic) learning to do some dances from a few locals. Fact: I cannot dance, my feet will not function. I can, however, do a good rendition of the freestyle (aka waving my arms around ridiculously).

Almost done,

You’re a welcome break from the bustle of Rome! Such a tiny hill town hidden within the many other hilltowns of the Abruzzo region in Italy. My RISD EHP group visited as part of a greater collaboration of multiple US universities/schools to help figure out ways to revitalize the region after the 2009 earthquake. While L’Aquila bore the brunt of the earthquake, being practically the epicenter, it still had lots of people hanging around, hoping for reconstruction. Here in teeny tiny Castelvecchio, the population was already dwindling before the earthquake hit and after the quake, the damage to the medieval town center, while comparatively not as bad as in L’Aquila, was enough to drive a lot of the citizens away. Currently, there’s only about 15 people living within the town walls, most of the population now lives outside the walls.

An aerial photo of the town hanging in the town hall:

The town center layout was really unique: one main street going straight down the middle of the town, side streets radiating off in lines like lines of soldiers, and all fitting into a tight oval. Most of the wall that protected the town in medieval times has now been incorporated into the housing, some of the housing on the outside of the oval still have buttresses.

Some views of the center:

This is one of the houses that have been built into the town wall, note the buttresses on the bottom half:

A view through a doorway, you can seen the wooden beams that used to support a floor (now collapsed onto the floor below):

Scaffolding support for the archway into the old town square:

Next is a good shot of typical entrance stairs that lead out onto the street. These aren’t damaged; the weird cutout parts at the bottom of the stairs are actually intentionally. Back in the days of yore, donkeys were the preferred mode of transportation, but the streets were a bit too narrow with people sticking their staircases all over the place. Someone got the ingenious idea to curve the bottoms of the stairs to allow just enough space for a man and his full-loaded donkey to get by. This is pretty much the only place where this is done. Pretty cool, though maybe not for the donkeys, they still had to carry stuff:

A view of one of the roads connecting Castelvecchio to Calascio, a nearby hilltown:

Speaking of Calascio:

There it is on the right side of the pic. Notice the castle topping the hill behind it?

That’s Rocca Calascio, a long-ruined fortress that was enlisted as part of the set in the movie Ladyhawke. We unfortunately didn’t have time to go visit it and recreate the movie, drat!

Back to you, Castelvecchio! The town chuch seemed pretty standard and very modest on the outside, the bell tower with the 3 different-sized bells was a neat feature. The bell tower suffered a bit of damage from the earthquake, but it looks like it’s been fixed up:

The town church used to be down the side of the hill about a 10-15 minute walk, but then after two children died on their way to the church in the winter, the townspeople decided to build a new one right next to the wall. I didn’t get to see the old church, but the new church (new being a relative term, it’s still pretty old!) had a nice surprise inside:

A very ornate and large altar piece! It was quite pretty with gold paint highlights everywhere. A closer look:

It looked to be mostly constructed of carved wood with 4 saints depicted at their moment of martyrdom: San Laurenti (grilled to death), San Cypriane (beheaded), San Ioannes Baptista (looks to be Saint John the Baptist, when he was beheaded and his head given to a vengeful woman), and San Martinus (Saint Martin of Tours, giving half his cloak to a beggar, actually wasn’t martyred, but still nice enough to be declared a saint).

Most of the damaged buildings were off limits to us, but there were a few that were open that I could glimpse inside:

The interior shots made nice urban decay photos, but it was a bit heartbreaking to see the rooms in such a state of disuse. People used to live here in the center not that long ago, and the whole place is on its way to becoming a medieval relic unless something is done to bring back some semblance of an economy to support it. Hopefully our project does something to help spur a recovery.

To your benefit, Castelvecchio, you got some great views. To the south, Carapelle Calvisio:

To the east, mountains:

And to the northeast, the best valley scene I could find:

Ciao,

It was a blue sky day on the first day of my visit this past weekend; I was with my RISD EHP student group on our way to Castelvecchio Calvisio. Our mission: figure out a way to help the town of Castelvecchio recover after devastating earthquake damage. Visiting you was important too because you’re one of the main cities of the Italian Abruzzo region and the same April 2009 earthquake that affected Castelvecchio also affected you as well; the damage is more apparent when it’s laid against a backdrop of modernity.

The whole city, in a big quirky nutshell, is the historical sum of 99 different (according to stories) feudal lords agreeing to merge together. They all decided to move into the city area and build a bunch of homes in their designated neighborhood, along with a piazza and a church. The Fountain of 99 Spouts (Fontana delle 99 Cannelle) in the city commemorates this founding event, most of the original piazzas and churches remain to this day. Talk about uber teamwork!

We were granted special permission to walk down the main street which was the Red Zone where the buildings had suffered the most damage. At first glance things seem pretty fine:

But very quickly we discovered how bad the damage was. Almost every building we saw had some sort of scaffolding support or other support to hold the structures together:

Some buildings had more modern supports in place: construction belts with cinches. I’ve seen these holding huge piles of uncut lumber logs together on trailer beds. Apparently they also make very good earthquake supports since they are lighter than steel scaffolding and much cheaper, as well as being a bit gentler on the structure. There was a whole series of columns that had these belts holding them straight:

Elsewhere, some girder supports for archways:

When the 2009 earthquake happened, a little over 300 people were killed and thousands of people made homeless. The majority of those people are currently rehoused in government-built housing on the outskirts; ugly, but meant to be temporary. However, temporary looks to be permanent thus far as the Italian government has been slow in initiating clean-ups. Most of the citiy’s 99 churches were in varying degrees of damage, some only missing a few pieces, others nearly shaken apart into chunks. Poor materials and construction seems to have been a contributor to the damage, unfortunately; some of the buildings weren’t built to code. A large part of the Cathedral of San Massimo collapsed into itself and the Church of Anime Sante wasn’t looking too happy, it had some of those construction belts holding up its facade:

Lots of the citizens were understandably unhappy: being affected by the earthquake was already traumatic, then being moved into temporary housing without the benefits of the local communities that they formed (they weren’t allowed to move into the temporary housing complexes with the people they had grown up with in their local communities) and then having to wait an awful long time for anyone to even start reconstructing their homes… some citizens became fed up and started organizing clean-ups on their own. A construction fence became their banner of protest. People tied the keys to their houses onto the wires, sending a message to the government and the rest of Italy: We won’t forget our homes, we still care about L’Aquila, please don’t forget us!”

There were also For Sale signs from people trying to sell their homes. One sign we found seems to describe the feelings of the L’Aquila citizens the best:

The sign in green reads:

FOR SALE

A House, Open Sky

No Walls, Lots of Light

Inaccessible, in the Red Zone

L’Aquila

Any takers? Well then, next up is Castelvecchio Calvisio…

Continua,

I met up with a few friends of yours a few days ago, we chatted about the weather nowadays (pretty nice) and hairballs (pretty gross). One of them had just had surgery to remove a tumor and was grumbling over the politics in the newspaper:

Another was practicing sleep meditation, which involved sleeping in the most uncomfortable places in ridiculously contorted positions. The latest position was called the Trash Can Curl:

Last one was a sweet little granny who was very old. Her kidneys were on their way out, but she still knew how to enjoyed a good chin scratch:

“Standing is overrated,” she said to me. “Burns too many calories. Lying down is optimal for the body.” She demonstrated:

Elsewhere in the city, the words of the band Oasis were being called upon to grace an old unused doorway by the Royal Spanish Academy:

I met this stately lion statue at the National Museum of Oriental Art on via Merulana in Rome. I asked if I could braid his mane since there was so much of it. He looked me in the eye with a disapproving glare and a sneer, then said that he certainly wouldn’t mind having Christina fingers as an appetizer for his dinner. What a pompous kitty!
Started at Sant’Agata Church right off the main street Viale di Trastevere near Ponte Garibaldi. The crowd that gathered was thick, but there was still enough elbow room to maneuver around.

The crowd in front of Sant’Agata:

The procession started with a bang, literally! Firecrackers went off above and a shower of paper confetti rained down as the Madonna statue came out of the church in a decorated canopy with cherubs and two long beams of wood for the team of carriers to rest on their shoulders and carry around the canopy with.

The canopy for the Madonna statue:

The procession headed out of the church through the crowd and started on its journey through the rest of of the neighborhood, stopped at a few churches along the way. The crowd dutifully followed, singing along with a priest on a mic and yelling out Viva Maria! often.

The crowd follows down a smaller secondary street to the first church:

People peered out of their windows along the procession path and watched or took pictures. Everybody clapped each time the canopy carriers paused to put down the canopy and take a brief break. Because the procession itself would actually be a quick 15 minute jaunt around the streets if it weren’t for the fact that the canopy itself was HEAVY. There was about 16 full grown men carrying this thing around with the wooden beams on their shoulders (and thick shoulder pads) and one could definitely see them using all their strength carrying the Madonna. The beams even bowed a little from the weight. The team of men could only go about 100 feet before their leader would ring a bell for them to stop and rest, then the leader would ring the bell again for them to lift the canopy and continue. So the whole procession took almost two hours.

The men preparing to lift the Madonna:

A close up view of the Madonna del Carmine (nice crown!):

The Madonna statue wasn’t the only part of the procession, preceding her was a party of monks with banners, nuns, some public officials with a troop of carabinieri (pretty much the equivalent of police officers in the US), a big wooden cross carried by a monk, a little metal cross carried by another monk, a full marching band, and a quartet of mounted uniformed horsemen (and horsewoman) leading the way.

The mounted quartet:

A member of the procession with sword and fluffy hat accessory waiting for the canopy carriers to catch up:

The procession ended at San Crisogono, the church right next door to Sant’Agata. There was more fireworks and confetti:

The horsemen (and horsewoman) were saluting the Madonna, but the fireworks were on the verge of spooking the horses in to bolting and the people behind them were backing up, just in case. Luckily the fireworks didn’t last for too long and the horses calmed down, then the Madonna was carried into San Crisogono by the men who were probably really glad to give their shoulders a rest. Bravo, Madonna canopy carriers!

Ciao,

You’ve got nothing on Porta Portese flea market here in Rome, this place could eat you for breakfast. Every Sunday morning an army of peddlers converge on this area in Trastevere to sell all their stuff. Named after Portese Gate, the market starts at the gate and keeps going and going…. Some things that I saw at the market today:

Glass chandeliers
Flowers, both real and fake
Yu-Gi-Oh! trading cards
Kitchen goods
Bathroom goods
More cheap clothes and underwear than you can shake a stick at, seriously!
Computer parts
Antiques and secondhand reproductions of antiques
Stuffed animals
Shoes
Old books
Music records
Radio-controlled flying helicopters
Lots of bags and purses, including “authentic” Louis Vuitton bags
Child-size crossbow kit (fully functional, includes a set of arrows)
Pets (goldfish, birds, tiny turtles, and guinea pigs)
Naked Barbie dolls
Cell phones
Old-school rotary telephones

This is a good place to practice my haggling skills, woot!

Ciao,

I met some of your cousins the other day at the cat sanctuary in Torre Argentina. Many of them were being quite lazy and sleeping wherever they felt like it without regards to people around them. I actually almost stepped on one guy sleeping on the steps leading down to the sanctuary, he didn’t even bother opening his eyes or moving over a bit, how rude!

The Torre Argentina, in all its ruined glory:

The blistering Roman sun apparently melts bones and renders cats incapable of standing, thus resulting in laziness:

Hiding in the shade, grumpily:

Inside the sanctuary headquarters, the cats were roaming free except for a few separated in quarantine. One of the quarantined was a white cat batting around a jingly cat toy and causing a loud ruckus. He seemed to be enjoying himself, even though he was totally deaf (as some white cats are genetically prone to being) and couldn’t hear any of the jingling that he was causing.

Another was a scrawny black kitten with what looked like a cataract in one eye:

There was one black cat roaming free and visiting his friends in the cages. He’s pretty feisty, Pandora, he totally reminds me of your best-friend-forever Mr. Todd:

Everybody here has been neutered/spayed and are being cared for by the volunteers of the Torre Argentina cat sanctuary. Hopefully everybody finds good homes!

Ciao,
